Campus Albertov Biocentrum, Globcentrum

The university compound arranged in a chequered pattern surrounded by a half-circle of slopes of Albertov. A strict orthogonal rationality of buildings and walkways transforms into the surrounding wild plantscape. Albertov (street) is the urbanistic axis of the campus. For it is the strongest collector of human energy, it is predetermined to become the main square, its heart. It was the scene of historic moments in the past, its significance reaches far beyond the local scale, and so it is a public space in the strict sense. Drawing from the rationality of the orthogonal University campus, from the modular base of work cells – we design an elementary lapidary grid, a spatial grate that can be filled in, adapt, and be flexible.

Globcentrum
The building is designed as a closed atrium system. The structure provides stability and a fixed framework in the interior. Greenery in the interior provides shade and lovely views from workplaces. We open meeting points to a vertical park allowing interaction of students and visitors. There are amenities open to the public on the ground floor (a coffee shop, a textbook shop). A reception and a turnstile system separate the public from the school areas. Climbing plants maintain the climate in the atrium. Three lifts located close to the atrium’s centre are the means of vertical circulation. There are labs and offices on the first to the fifth storey; they are always oriented to the outside. We orientate the university halls and areas not requiring natural ventilation to the atrium. The building has a basement. The second basement accommodates a car park for 100 vehicles. Due to the sloping grade, a short section in the first basement is above the ground level. A canteen is located here. Rooms not needing daylight occupy the rest of this storey.

Biocentrum
We define the piazzetta as a local extension of the central public space – the Albertov street. A system of staircases and ramps connects the main entrance hall to the public life in the campus. The entrance to sports facilities, a coffee shop, and other amenities allocated for the public are oriented towards this subspace.Meeting points are an important quality for informal meetings generating unexpected solutions; this is why we position dayrooms, seminar classrooms, and study rooms to the central block. The open frame structure provides picture views to the surroundings. The building is designed as an open comb system. The circulation core with a bank of lifts and the main staircase is located to the building’s point of gravity to make the walking distances as short as possible. Operation blocks are oriented straight to the core. Each of these blocks is conceived as three-bay. Offices and laboratories are always oriented to the exterior. The building has two basement stories below approximately a half of its footprint. An underground car park with 90 parking places is in the second basement. The first basement accommodates animal quarters.
